    HL-LHC era at LHC

    Overview

We have two main purposes in carrying out our APCTP programs: understanding the nature of Quantum Chromo-Dynamic (QCD) matter under extreme conditions, or the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), and establishing an internationally recognizable Korean heavy-ion physics community.

During over the last three decades continuous efforts on the studies of relativistic heavy-ion collisions in both theory and experiment have been made as attempts to understand the nature of QCD matter at high densities and temperatures. There has been a lot of experimental results from the dedicated experiments carried out at CERN, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and finally at CERN, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), ten times more energetic than RHIC. They have given us some significant evidence for the existence of a system made up of deconfined quarks and gluons and its physical properties. Recently, the LHC has been under upgrade for last three years to offer more energetic and higher luminous beams starting from next year, 2022, which can lead us more detailed information on the strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions. Therefore, we expect that coming years will be crucial in characterizing the QCD matter not only quantitatively abut also qualitatively. In addition, we also see constructions of new colliders at intermediate and low temperatures over the world, e.g., FAIR/NICA in Germany, FRIB in United States, and RAON in Korea, which will also help us in understanding the QCD matter from various perspectives.

To keep pace with these new experimental measurements on the QCD matter from various colliders at different energies we focus on the study of the quark matter in the 2022 APCTP topical research program, trying to get prepared for the future heavy ion collision experiments.

Specifically, in the second meeting of 2022 in July, we will focus on the experiments at LHC. LHC is rerun this year after huge upgrade of LS2. With high luminosity beam and more powerful detectors, we expect to get more significant data on hadron production mechanism, multi-quarks hadrons, various properties of QCD matter. The ALICE and CMS programs will be reviewed and their future upgrade plan will be discussed in the context of Korean contribution. Furthermore, the overview of SQM 2022 will be summarized in this meeting.
