APCTP to Host ‘2025 International Conference & The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium’

- World-renowned physicists to gather in Pohang to explore the origin and evolution of the universe

 

The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP, President: Misao Sasaki) will host the “2025 APCTP International Conference & The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium” from November 17 to 21, 2025, at Lahan Hotel Pohang. This international academic event aims to bring together theoretical physicists from across the Asia–Pacific region to explore the origin and evolution of the universe, as well as key challenges in modern theoretical physics from the perspective of fundamental science.

 

The event consists of two programs: the 2025 APCTP International Conference (November 17–19) and the 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium (November 19–21). The conference commemorates the inauguration of President Sasaki and seeks to deepen research in cosmology while promoting academic exchange among researchers worldwide. The following symposium will bring together researchers trained and supported by APCTP to share their accumulated achievements, exploring future directions for collaboration.

 

Under the theme “Cosmology as Fundamental Physics,” the International Conference will revisit core cosmological principles and focus on key topics such as dark matter, inflation, black holes, and gravitational waves. Distinguished scholars from leading research institutions—including the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (University of Tokyo), UCLA, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and National Taiwan University—will present their latest research findings and theoretical insights into the fundamental laws of the universe.

Among these speakers, Prof. Rashid Sunyaev, Honorary Director of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and Senior Scientist at the Russian Academy of Sciences, will deliver a special session lecture. Prof. Sunyaev established a theoretical foundation for understanding the structure and evolution of the universe through his pioneering research on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and made groundbreaking contributions to the study of light–matter interactions in extreme astrophysical environments such as galaxy clusters and black holes. For his achievements, he has received several of the most prestigious awards in physics and astronomy, including the Crafoord Prize¹⁾ in Astronomy, the Gruber Cosmology Prize²⁾, and the Max Planck Medal³⁾.

1) Crafoord Prize in Astronomy: Awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, this prize recognizes outstanding achievements in fields not covered by the Nobel Prizes, such as astronomy, mathematics, life sciences, and geosciences.

2) Gruber Cosmology Prize: Presented by the Gruber Foundation (U.S.), this award honors researchers who have made groundbreaking contributions in mathematics, life sciences, and fundamental physics.

3) Max Planck Medal: Conferred by the German Physical Society (DPG), this is the most prestigious award in theoretical physics, given to scientists who have made exceptional contributions to the field.

 

The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium will feature presentations by APCTP alumni and current researchers, highlighting recent progress across a wide span of theoretical physics, including cosmology, condensed-matter physics, and quantum theory. Built upon APCTP’s 30-year research network, this symposium is designed to strengthen international cooperation and foster connections among the next generation of physicists.

 

The symposium will include 15 speakers covering a wide range of topics such as cosmology, condensed-matter physics, and quantum theory. Notable speakers include Prof. Hanno Sahlmann (Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen–Nürnberg, Germany), Prof. Kiyoung Choi (Sungkyunkwan University, Korea), and Prof. Taegon Song(Kongju National University, Korea). These and other researchers who have built their academic foundations at APCTP will gather to present their work, demonstrating the Center’s ongoing efforts to expand its international research network and enhance its global impact.

 

President Sasaki commented, “This notable academic activity serves as a platform to explore the fundamental questions of cosmology through the language of physics, deepening the foundations of theoretical research and promoting academic exchange among scientists. We also hope that outstanding researchers from around the world will experience Korea’s vibrant basic science environment and that, in the long term, this will encourage greater inflow of talent and strengthen Korea’s leadership in fundamental science on the global stage.”

 

Meanwhile, the APCTP, established in conjunction with the 1996 APEC Ministerial Meeting, is the only international center for theoretical physics hosted by the Republic of Korea. Located on the POSTECH campus in Pohang, the Center currently maintains cooperative relations with 19 member countries and 36 partner institutes and has attracted and nurtured over 300 scientists from both Korea and abroad. With sustained support from the Korean Government’s Science and Technology Promotion Fund and the Lottery Fund, the APCTP continues to grow and expand its research collaborations, actively promoting joint research and academic exchange in theoretical physics and basic sciences throughout the region. In addition, through a variety of public programs—including popular science lectures, regional science festivals, and youth outreach activities—the APCTP contributes to enhancing the public value of basic science.

– 우주의 기원과 진화를 주제로 세계 석학 한 자리에 –  

 

아시아태평양이론물리센터(소장 사사키 미사오, 이하 APCTP)는 2025년 11월 17일부터 21일까지 포항 라한호텔에서 ‘2025 APCTP International Conference & The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium’을 개최한다. 이번 행사는 아시아태평양 권역의 이론물리 연구자들이 한자리에 모여 기초물리학의 관점에서 우주의 기원과 진화, 그리고 현대 이론물리의 핵심 쟁점들을 논의하기 귀해 마련된 국제 학술행사이다.

 

본 행사는 `2025 APCTP International Conference’(11월 17일∼19일)와 `The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium’(11월 19일∼21일)으로 구성된다. 17일부터 19일까지 진행되는 컨퍼런스는 사사키 소장의 취임을 기념하고, 우주론 연구의 심화와 국내외 연구자 간 학문적 교류 활성화를 목적으로 한다. 이어지는 심포지엄은 APCTP가 배출한 연구자들이 세계 각국에서 축적한 연구성과를 공유함으로써, 이론물리연구의 최신 동향을 종합적으로 조망하고 발전 방향을 모색할 예정이다.

 

앞서 진행되는 컨퍼런스는 Cosmology as Fundamental Physics를 주제로 우주론의 기초 원리를 물리학적 관점에서 재조명하고, 암흑물질, 인플레이션, 블랙홀, 중력파 등 현대 우주론의 핵심 이슈를 중심으로 진행된다. 막스플랑크 천체물리연구소, 도쿄대학교 카블리 물리수학연구소, UCLA, 중국과학원, 대만국립타이완대학교 등 세계 유수 연구기관을 대표하는 석학들이 참여해 우주의 근본 물리를 탐구하는 최신 연구성과와 이론적 쟁점을 공유한다.

이들 연사 가운데는 현대 우주론과 천체물리학을 대표하는 세계적 석학, 수냐예프 라시드 교수(막스플랑크 천체물리연구소 명예소장, 러시아 과학아카데미 수석연구원)가 특별세션 강연자로 참여한다. 그는 우주배경복사(CMB) 연구를 통해 우주의 구조와 진화를 설명하는 이론적 토대를 마련하고, 은하단과 블랙홀 등 극한 천체의 물리 과정을 규명한 공로로 크라포르드 천문학상¹⁾, 그루버 우주론상²⁾, 막스플랑크 메달³⁾ 등 해당 분야에서 최고 권위를 인정받는 학술상을 수상한 바 있다.

1)크라포르드 천문학상(Crafoord Prize): 스웨덴 왕립과학원이 수여하며, 노벨상에서 다루지 않는 분야(천문학, 수학, 생명과학, 지구과학 등)의 탁월한 연구 성과를 기리는 상

2)그루버 우주론상(Gruber Cosmology Prize): 미국 브레이크스루 프라이즈 재단이 수학, 생명과학, 기초물리학 분야에서 획기적인 연구 성과를 거둔 연구자에게 수여

3)막스플랑크 메달 (Max Plank Medal): 독일물리학회가 수여하며, 이론물리학 분야에서 탁월한 공헌을 한 과학자에게 주어지는 최고 권위의 상

 

이에 이어지는 The 9th APCTP Alumni Scientific Symposium에서는 APCTP가 배출한 국내외 우수 연구자들과 상주연구자들이 한자리에 모여 이론물리학의 다양한 분야에서 축적된 연구 성과를 공유하고, 지속적인 학문 교류와 협력 방안을 모색한다. 이번 심포지엄은 특히 APCTP의 30여 년간의 연구 네트워크를 기반으로, 국제 공동연구와 차세대 연구자 간의 협력 활성화를 도모하는 뜻깊은 자리로 마련됐다.

 

심포지엄은 총 15명의 연사 구성으로 우주론·물질물리·양자이론 등 이론물리의 폭넓은 분야에서 최근 연구성과를 공유한다. APCTP 배출 연구자인 한노 잘만 교수(프리드리히 알렉산더 대학교), 최기영 교수(성균관대학교), 송태근 교수(공주대학교) 등이 연사로 나서는 등 APCTP에서 연구의 기반을 다져왔거나 현재 활발히 활동 중인 연구자들이 한자리에 모여 강연을 펼치며 APCTP 연구 네트워크의 지속성과 확장성을 보여주는 의미있는 행사로 기대된다.

 

APCTP 사사키 소장은 “이번 행사는 우주론의 근본 문제를 물리학의 언어로 새롭게 탐구하는 자리로, 이론물리의 기초를 심화하고 연구자 간의 학문적 교류를 촉진하는 데 의미가 있다”며, “세계 각국의 우수 연구자들이 한국의 기초과학 연구 환경을 경험하고 장기적으로 국내 연구 생태계로의 유입이 촉진되어 대한민국이 기초과학계의 트렌드를 주도하고 국제적 위상을 높일 수 있도록 노력하겠다”는 다짐을 밝혔다.

 

한편, APCTP는 1996년 아시아태평양경제협력기구(APEC) 회의를 계기로 설립된 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터로, POSTECH(포항 소재) 내 위치하여 아시아태평양 지역 19개 회원국 및 36개 협정기관과 협력하고 있다. 설립 이후 정부의 과학기술진흥기금과 복권기금의 지원을 바탕으로 지속적으로 성장하며, 지금까지 300여 명의 우수한 차세대 과학자를 상주 연구인력으로 유치·양성해 왔다. 또한 이론물리 분야의 공동연구와 학술 교류를 활발히 촉진해 국가 기초과학 경쟁력 강화에 기여하고 있으며, 대중강연·참여형 과학축제·청소년 과학문화 프로그램 등 다양한 활동을 통해 기초과학의 공익적 가치 확산에도 앞장서고 있다.
