Honored with the 2025 Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Award

The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), led by President Misao Sasaki, announced that Professor Jae-Hyung Jeon, Executive Director of the APCTP, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Award in the Science and Technology Promotion category.

 

Established in 2001, the Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the development and dissemination of science and technology. The award aims to inspire creativity in research and development and to promote a vibrant culture of science and technology within the region.

 

Professor Jeon was recognized for his distinguished achievements in promoting basic sciences, advancing the internationalization of science and technology, and nurturing the next generation of global scientific leaders through his exceptional research and leadership.

 

Since assuming the role of Executive Director in 2021, Professor Jeon has demonstrated outstanding leadership by enhancing regional science governance through the effective management of government-funded public projects, expanding international cooperation through APEC-based initiatives and advancing science diplomacy, and strengthening the foundation for science popularization and talent development in the Gyeongbuk region. These accomplishments collectively led to his selection as this year’s awardee.

 

The 2025 Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Award Ceremony will be held on Saturday, October 18, during the Gyeongbuk Science Festival at the Andong Gymnasium. The festival, one of the province’s major annual science events, will run from October 18 to 19, featuring exhibitions, hands-on activities, and lectures designed to inspire scientific curiosity among the public. In connection with the festival, APCTP will host the “Author Lecture Series for the APCTP Best Science Books,” engaging the local community throughout the two-day program of science and culture events.

 

President Sasaki remarked, “The APCTP has been deeply committed not only to research at the domestic and international level but also to initiatives that engage and benefit the local community. It is rewarding to see these efforts recognized. Moving forward, APCTP will continue to elevate Korea’s scientific stature while broadening science outreach activities for the citizens of Gyeongbuk Province.”

 

Founded in 1996 following the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, the APCTP is Korea’s only international theoretical physics institute. Currently, it maintains cooperative relationships with 19 member countries/institutes and 36 partner institutions across the Asia-Pacific region and has attracted and nurtured more than 300 early-career researchers to date. With sustained support from the government’s Science and Technology Promotion Fund and Lottery Fund, the Center continues to grow and expand research collaborations, actively promoting joint research and academic exchange in theoretical physics and basic sciences throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, through public-oriented scientific outreach and social contribution activities, the APCTP strives to enhance public value by sharing scientific achievements with society.

 

 

 

아태이론물리센터 전재형 사무총장, 경북과학기술대상 과학기술진흥 부문 수상

- 국제화와 지역사회 기여 공로 인정 -

 

(재)아태이론물리센터(소장 사사키 미사오, 이하 APCTP)는 `2025 경북과학기술대상 과학기술진흥 부문 대상 수상자로 전재형 사무총장이 선정되었다고 밝혔다.

 

경북과학기술대상은 과학기술의 육성과 그 문화 확산에 현저한 기여를 한 개인 또는 단체에 수여되는 상으로, 창의적인 연구개발 의욕을 고취시키고 과학기술문화 저변확대를 위해 2001년 제정됐다. 수상자는 부문별 성과, 우수성, 그리고 지역 과학기술 발전에 대한 기여도 등을 종합적으로 평가해 선정된다.

 

전재형 사무총장은 물리 연구 활동을 중심으로 기초과학 진흥 및 과학기술의 국제화에 기여하고 우수한 연구성과를 바탕으로 차세대 글로벌 리더 육성에 공헌한 업적을 인정받았다.

 

특히, 2021년 APCTP 사무총장으로 부임하여 ▲정부 공공사업 우수 운영을 통한 지역 과학행정 위상 제고 ▲APEC 기반 국제협력 확대 및 과학외교 실현 ▲과학문화 대중화 및 지역 인재 양성 기반 확립 등 전반적인 사업 운영과 공로를 인정받아 수상자로 선정됐다.

 

2025 경북과학기술대상 시상식은 오는 10월 18일(토) 안동체육관에서 개최되는 경북과학축전 내에서 진행될 예정이다. 경북과학축전은 경상북도에서 매년 개최하는 대표적인 과학문화 축제로 다양한 전시·체험·강연 프로그램으로 구성되어 있다. 경북과학축전에 APCTP가 경북도민들을 대상으로 APCTP 올해의 과학도서 저자강연이 연계하여 양일간 진행 예정이다.

 

사사키 소장은 “센터는 국내외 연구 활동과 국제학술 활동뿐만 아니라 지역 공동체를 위한 다양한 활동도 이어오고 있다”며, “이러한 노력이 결실을 거두는 것 같다. 앞으로도 센터는 국가적 위상을 높이는 동시에 경북도민을 위한 다양한 과학문화 활동을 함께 펼쳐나갈 것이다”라고 밝혔다.

 

한편, APCTP는 1996년 아시아태평양경제협력기구(APEC) 회의를 계기로 설립된, 우리나라가 유치한 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터다. 현재 아태 지역 19개 회원국 및 36개 협력·협정기관과 협력 관계를 맺고 있으며, 지금까지 300여 명의 국내외 과학 인재를 유치하고 양성해 왔다. 정부의 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금의 지원을 바탕으로 지속적인 성장과 연구 협력 확대를 이어가며, 아시아태평양 지역의 이론물리 및 기초과학 분야에서 공동연구와 학술 교류를 활발히 촉진하고 있다. 또한, 대중강연, 지역 과학축제, 청소년 대상 프로그램 등 시민 대상의 다양한 프로그램을 통해 기초과학의 공익적 가치를 증진하고 있다.
