Elected as APS Fellow 2025

 

Professor Misao Sasaki, the 10th President of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), has been elected as a 2025 Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in recognition of his distinguished research achievements and global contributions to the field of physics, particularly for his seminal contributions to cosmology and astrophysics, including cosmological perturbation theory, gravitational wave physics, and foundational insights into how quantum perturbations shaped the structure of the present universe.

 

The APS Fellow distinction is one of the highest academic honors awarded by the American Physical Society, recognizing researchers who have made outstanding contributions to physics and to the scientific community. Fewer than 0.5% of APS members are elected each year. Fellows are honored for their excellence in research across fundamental and applied physics, as well as for their leadership, mentorship, and service in advancing the discipline. Established in 1921, the APS Fellowship has long symbolized scientific distinction and global impact, with past Fellows including world-renowned physicists and Nobel Laureates such as Richard P. Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg, and Frank Wilczek.

 

Founded in 1899, the American Physical Society is among the world’s most prestigious scientific societies, with over 50,000 members engaged in fields spanning fundamental, applied, quantum, astrophysical, and particle physics. APS plays a leading role in scientific research, education, and international collaboration, and the APS Global Physics Summit and its annual Fall Meeting are the largest physics conferences in the world. Through its Physical Review journals—including Physical Review Letters and Physical Review X—APS continues to set the global standard for excellence in physics research.

 

Professor Sasaki has previously received several major international honors, including the Humboldt Research Award (2008)¹⁾, the Daiwa Adrian Prize (2010)²⁾, and the Benjamin W. Lee Professorship Award (2024)³⁾ in Theoretical Physics. In 2025, he was also elected as a Fellow of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (ISGRG)⁴⁾, recognizing his groundbreaking contributions to modern cosmology and gravitational theory. As APCTP President, he will continue to strengthen the Center’s mission to attract top-tier global researchers and expand the foundation for basic science in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region.

APCTP was established in 1996 on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting as the only international center for theoretical physics hosted by Korea. Currently, it maintains cooperative relationships with 19 member countries and 36 partnership institutes across the Asia-Pacific region and has attracted and nurtured more than 300 early-career researchers to date. With sustained support from the government’s Science and Technology Promotion Fund and Lottery Fund, the Center continues to grow and expand research collaborations, actively promoting joint research and academic exchange in theoretical physics and basic sciences throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, through public-oriented scientific outreach and social contribution activities, the APCTP strives to enhance public value by sharing scientific achievements with society.

 

Under the leadership of Professor Sasaki, the APCTP has been continuously promoting research collaboration and strengthening international networks in the field of theoretical physics across the Asia-Pacific region. Serving as the Headquarters of the Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS), established in 1989, the APCTP plays a pivotal role alongside the American Physical Society (APS) and the European Physical Society (EPS) as one of the three major physics associations in the world. Comprising 21 member societies, the AAPPS actively fosters international exchange and cooperation among researchers in the region through the triennial Asia-Pacific Physics Conference (APPC) and the publication of its academic journal, AAPPS Bulletin.

 

 

 

 

아시아태평양이론물리센터 제10대 소장 사사키 미사오 교수, 2025 APS Fellow 선정

 

아시아태평양이론물리센터(이하 APCTP)의 제10대 소장으로 선임된 사사키 미사오 교수가 물리학 전 분야에서 세계적인 연구 성과와 학문적 기여를 인정받는 APS(American Physics Society, 미국물리학회)의 2025년도 Fellow로 선정되었다. 그는 우주론과 천체물리학 분야에서 선구적인 연구를 수행하였으며, 특히 우주론적 섭동이론과 중력파 물리학, 그리고 양자 섭동이 오늘날 우주의 구조 형성에 미친 영향을 규명하는 이론적 기반을 확립한 공로가 높이 평가되었다.

 

APS Fellow는 미국물리학회(American Physical Society, APS)가 물리학 연구와 학문 공동체 발전에 탁월한 공헌을 이룬 연구자에게 수여하는 세계 최고 권위의 학문적 영예 중 하나로, 전 세계 APS 회원 중 약 0.5% 미만만이 매년 선정된다. 수상자는 기초 및 응용물리학 전 분야에서 뛰어난 연구 성과를 거두고, 교육·산업·정책 등 다양한 영역에서 물리학 발전에 기여한 인물로서, 학문적 성취뿐 아니라 과학 공동체에 대한 봉사, 국제적 리더십, 후학 양성 등의 공헌이 종합적으로 평가된다.

 

APS Fellow는 1921년 제정된 이래 전 세계 물리학계의 최고 수준 연구자들에게 부여되는 상징적 지위로 자리 잡았으며, 이를 수여받는 것은 물리학 분야에서의 독창적 연구 성과와 국제적 영향력을 공식적으로 인정받는 것을 의미한다. 역대 Fellow에는 파인만 리처드(Richard P. Feynman), 겔만 머리(Murray Gell-Mann), 와인버그 스티븐(Steven Weinberg), 윌첵 프랭크(Frank Wilczek) 등 다수의 노벨물리학상 수상자 및 세계적 석학들이 포함되어 있다.

 

APS(American Physical Society)는 1899년에 설립된 세계에서 가장 권위 있는 물리학 학회 중 하나로, 5만 명이 넘는 회원이 기초·응용·양자·천체·응집물질·입자·핵·중력 물리 등 폭넓은 분야에서 활동하고 있다. APS는 연구 발전뿐 아니라 과학 교육, 정책 자문, 산업 및 국제 협력에도 중추적 역할을 수행한다. 매년 열리는 APS 글로벌 물리학 정상회의 및 APS 가을 정기 학술대회는 수천 명의 물리학자가 참여하는 세계 최대 규모의 학술대회이며, Physical Review 시리즈를 통해 세계 최고 수준의 연구 성과를 발표한다. APS는 이를 통해 물리학 연구의 세계 표준을 제시하고 국제 과학 협력의 중심 역할을 맡고 있다.

 

사사키 소장은 2008년 훔볼트 연구상¹⁾, 2010년 다이와 아드리안상²⁾, 2024년 이휘소상(이론물리학 부문)³⁾ 수상 등 뛰어난 수상 이력을 보유하고 있으며 2025년 IGSRG Fellow⁴⁾로 선정되어 현대 우주론 연구의 핵심적 기반을 마련하는 등 탁월한 성과를 인정받고 있다. APCTP는 제10대 소장으로 사사키 교수를 선임한 것을 계기로, 국내외 우수 연구 인력 유입과 기초과학 저변 확대에 더욱 힘쓸 계획이다.

한편, APCTP는 1996년 아시아태평양경제협력기구(APEC) 회의를 계기로 설립된, 우리나라가 유치한 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터다. 현재 아태 지역 19개 회원국 및 36개 협정기관과 협력 관계를 맺고 있으며, 지금까지 300여 명의 신진연구자를 유치하고 양성해 왔다. 정부의 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금의 지원을 바탕으로 지속적인 성장과 연구 협력 확대를 이어가며, 아시아태평양 지역의 이론물리 및 기초과학 분야에서 공동연구와 학술 교류를 활발히 촉진하고 있다. 또한, 대중을 위한 과학 콘텐츠의 성과 확산과 사회 환원을 통해 공익적 가치를 증진하고자 다양한 활동을 전개하고 있다.

 

사사키 소장의 리더십 아래, APCTP는 아시아태평양 지역의 이론물리 연구 협력과 국제 네트워크 강화를 지속적으로 추진하고 있다. APCTP는 1989년 설립된 아시아태평양물리학회연합회(AAPPS)의 사무국으로서, 미국물리학회(APS)·유럽물리학회(EPS)와 함께 세계 3대 물리학 연합체의 한 축을 담당하고 있다. AAPPS는 21개 회원국의 물리학회를 중심으로 3년마다 아시아태평양물리학컨퍼런스(APPC)를 개최하고, 학술지 AAPPS Bulletin을 발간하는 등 지역 연구자들의 국제적 교류와 협력을 적극적으로 이끌고 있다.
