Passing of Professor Chen Ning Yang, the Founding President of APCTP

– Nobel laureate in Physics and a pioneering scholar who laid the cornerstone for the advancement of theoretical physics in the Asia-Pacific region

 

The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP), headed by President Misao Sasaki, announced with deep sorrow that Professor Chen Ning Yang, the founding director of the Center and a world-renowned theoretical physicist, passed away in Beijing, China, on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103.

 

In 1957, Professor Yang jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics with Dr. Tsung-Dao Lee for their experimental verification of the law of parity nonconservation, and he later proposed the Yang–Mills theory, which made a profound contribution to the establishment of the Standard Model of modern particle physics.

 

Beyond his academic achievements, Professor Yang consistently emphasized the importance of international scientific collaboration, grounded in his belief that the advancement of science arises from cooperation and the free exchange of knowledge across borders. This philosophy resonated deeply with the founding vision of the APCTP. In recognition of his distinguished scholarship and leadership, the APCTP appointed him as its founding president and chairman of the board in March 1997.

 

Following the establishment of the International Planning Committee (IPC) for the creation of the Center in 1993, the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) began its formal founding process when the IPC selected the Republic of Korea as the host country in 1994. The Center was officially founded in 1996, holding its inaugural general meeting the same year. During the APEC Ministerial Meeting in Seoul in November 1996, President Young-sam Kim publicly announced Korea’s commitment to hosting and supporting the Center at the governmental level. After receiving official approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the APCTP was registered as a non-profit foundation in April 1997. As the founding director, Professor Yang played a pivotal role in shaping the APCTP’s initial vision and organizational framework, laying the foundation for its growth into an international hub for cooperation in theoretical physics.

 

Professor Yang continued to devote himself to nurturing young physicists in the Asia-Pacific region and to promoting international academic exchange throughout his later years. His scholarly vision and leadership remain deeply aligned with the values of international cooperation that the APCTP upholds to this day.

 

President Sasaki stated, “Professor Chen Ning Yang was a great pioneer in theoretical physics and a true symbol of the Asia-Pacific scientific community,” and added, “We will honor his vision and legacy by further developing the APCTP into a global hub for cooperation in basic science.”

 

Meanwhile, the APCTP, established in conjunction with the 1996 APEC Ministerial Meeting, is the only international center for theoretical physics hosted by the Republic of Korea. The Center currently maintains cooperative relations with 19 member countries and 36 partner institutions, and has attracted and nurtured over 300 scientists from both Korea and abroad. With sustained support from the Korean Government’s Science and Technology Promotion Fund and the Lottery Fund, the APCTP continues to grow and expand its research collaborations, actively promoting joint research and academic exchange in theoretical physics and basic sciences throughout the region. In addition, through a variety of public programs—including popular science lectures, regional science festivals, and youth outreach activities—the Center contributes to enhancing the public value of basic science.

 

아태이론물리센터 초대 소장 양 전닝 교수 별세

– 노벨물리학상 수상자이자 아태권역 이론물리학 발전의 초석을 세운 석학

 

아시아태평양이론물리센터(소장 사사키 미사오, 이하 APCTP))는 센터의 초대 소장이자 세계적인 이론물리학자 양 전닝(Chen Ning Yang) 교수가 2025년 10월 18일 중국 베이징에서 향년 103세로 별세하였다고 밝혔다.

 

양 전닝 교수는 1957년 리정다오(Lee Tsung-Dao) 박사와 함께 ‘패리티 비보존 법칙’을 입증하여 노벨물리학상을 공동 수상하였으며, ‘양-밀스 이론(Yang–Mills theory)’을 제창하여 현대 입자물리학의 표준모형(Standard Model) 확립에 지대한 공헌을 하였다.

 

그는 학문적 업적뿐만 아니라, 과학의 발전은 국경을 초월한 협력과 자유로운 지식 교류에서 비롯된다는 신념 아래 국제 과학협력의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이러한 철학은 APCTP가 지향하는 설립 취지와 맞닿아 있었으며, APCTP는 그의 학문적 명성과 리더십을 높이 평가하여 1997년 3월 양 교수를 초대 소장 겸 이사장으로 선임하였다.

 

APCTP는 1993년 센터 설립을 위한 국제추진위원회(IPC, International Planning Committee)가 조직된 이후, 1994년 위원회에서 대한민국을 유치국으로 결정하면서 본격적인 설립이 추진되었다. 1996년 센터를 공식적으로 설립하고 창립총회를 개최하였으며, 같은 해 11월 서울에서 열린 APEC 각료회의에서 김영삼 대통령이 센터의 대한민국 유치와 정부 차원의 지원 의사를 천명하였다. 이듬해 과학기술부의 허가를 거쳐 1997년 4월 재단법인으로 정식 등록되었고, 양 교수는 초대 소장으로서 센터의 초기 비전과 운영 체계를 구축하며 이론물리학의 국제협력 허브로 발전할 수 있는 기틀을 마련하였다.

 

양 교수는 이후에도 아시아태평양 지역의 젊은 물리학자 양성과 국제 학술교류 활성화를 위해 지속적으로 헌신하였으며, 그의 학문적 비전과 리더십은 오늘날 APCTP가 추구하는 국제협력의 가치와 맞닿아 있다.

 

사사키 소장은 “양 전닝 교수께서는 이론물리학의 위대한 개척자이자 아시아태평양 이론물리 공동체의 상징이었다”며, “그의 비전과 유산을 계승하여 APCTP가 세계 기초과학 협력의 허브로 더욱 발전해 나가겠다”고 추모의 뜻을 전하였다.

 

한편, APCTP는 1996년 아시아태평양경제협력기구(APEC) 회의를 계기로 설립된, 우리나라가 유치한 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터다. 현재 아태 지역 19개 회원국 및 36개 협정기관과 협력 관계를 맺고 있으며, 지금까지 300여 명의 국내외 과학 인재를 유치하고 양성해 왔다. 정부의 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금의 지원을 바탕으로 지속적인 성장과 연구 협력 확대를 이어가며, 아시아태평양 지역의 이론물리 및 기초과학 분야에서 공동연구와 학술 교류를 활발히 촉진하고 있다. 또한, 대중강연, 지역 과학축제, 청소년 대상 프로그램 등 시민 대상의 다양한 프로그램을 통해 기초과학의 공익적 가치를 증진하고 있다.
