Applications are invited for two 1+1-year Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions in theoretical physics at the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) in Pohang, South Korea. Each appointment will initially be for one year and can be extended for an additional year subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of research funding.
APCTP, founded in 1996, is an international organization dedicated to excellence in research and the training of young scientists in the Asia-Pacific region. The Center provides a stimulating and internationally diverse research environment encompassing a broad range of fields, including particle physics, statistical physics, string theory, condensed matter physics, quantum information, and cosmology. APCTP also maintains extensive international collaborations and agreements with leading institutions worldwide, facilitating active scientific exchange.
Successful candidates will join the new Junior Research Group "Quantum Computation and Emergent Geometry" led by Dr. Alexander Jahn, which will begin its work in October 2026. The group will focus on the discrete-geometrical structure of encoded quantum information from broad perspectives within theoretical physics, combining ideas and methods of quantum error correction, holographic bulk-boundary dualities, operator algebras and tensor networks. Due to this interdisciplinary focus, candidates with diverse and complementary backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition to contributing to the research objectives of the group, successful candidates are also expected to foster and expand its international network of collaborations.
Starting date: Late 2026, with Nov 1 as the earliest possible date.
Requirements: A PhD in theoretical physics, completed by the starting date.
Background: Preference will be given to candidates with research experience in one or more of the following fields:
- High-energy theory, in particular holographic dualities, quantum gravity, and operator-algebraic methods
- Quantum information theory, in particular quantum error correction, (circuit) complexity, and fault tolerance
- Quantum many-body theory, in particular tensor-network methods, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum phase transitions
Experience in international research collaborations is also preferred.
